SAIPAN’S downtrend economy is alarming — immediate exodus of garment industry; emigration is rampant; tourism is dying; businesses continue to shut down; cost of utilities soars and crime rate escalates.
The urgent solution is: legalize casino.

Less than 400,000 tourists visited NMI in FY 2007

ONLY 395,360 tourists visited the islands in fiscal year 2007, the lowest over the past 10 years and the decline is largely attributed to Japan Airlines’ departure from the Saipan route two years ago. Marianas Visitors Authority data showed that from Oct. 2006 through September this year, 395,360 visitors came to the islands, down by 11 percent compared to FY 2006 when 443,812 tourists visited the CNMI. This is the first time in 10 years that the fiscal tourist arrivals rate of the CNMI dipped below 400,000. Department of Commerce data showed that in 1997, the CNMI had 695,000 visitors. Of the figure, 438,000 were Japanese. In 2007, only 280,292 Japanese tourists visited the islands, MVA statistics showed. After the 9/11 terror attacks in the U.S. in 2001, the tourist arrival rate plunged to 444,281 and further went down for the next two years. In 2004, it went up to 531,584 only to go down again following JAL’s announcement that it was pulling out its 14 weekly flights on the Saipan-Tokyo route. MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio said the sharp decline in Japanese arrivals pulled down the overall positive growth of the islands’ secondary tourism markets. Last month, arrivals rate from Japan went down by 43 percent to 12,794 from 22,550 during the same month last year. “Korean arrivals continue to soar and grew by 34 percent in comparison to the same period last year. While this is great news for the CNMI, the Japanese arrivals plummeted in the month of Sept. by 43 percent,” said Tenorio in MVA’s monthly arrivals release.
